What to Look for in an Attorney

Choosing an attorney can be intimidating, so it helps to know what to look for in order to avoid being overwhelmed. Before you decide on an attorney, it is important to determine not only if they will be able to win your case, but also if their working practices are compatible with your interests and budget. You can generally determine whether a certain attorney is what you are looking for by conducting a preliminary interview with the lawyer to see if they are right for you.

The first thing to look for in an attorney is trustworthiness. You can choose the best attorney in the business but if you can't trust them then you put yourself, your case, and often your finances in a risky position. Lawyers are only human, and prey to their own professional and personal desires, so you should look for someone who demonstrates a commitment to put you and your interests above those of their ego or their firm. They should demonstrate trustworthiness to you through an open and honest billing system and clarity and comfortability in discussing your case.

You should also look for a lawyer who is a specialist in your area, and ask them for proof of their experience. An attorney specializing in child exploitation may not be what you need for a traffic case, and vice versa. Your attorney should be comfortable enough to tell you if they are not the best choice--if, for example, you should consider an attorney in another specialty. This is another area in which you can assess your lawyer's honesty, as you can determine whether they are qualified or merely fee-hungry.

Finally, you should look for an attorney who is willing to take an unpopular course of action, whether that is in standing up against a colleague or in giving you some unpleasant legal advice. This demonstrates the attorney's knowledge of the law as well as their integrity, which will help foster a good working relationship between you and the lawyer as well as ensuring that your attorney will do their best to represent your interests in the case.

While these are only the most basic things to look for in an attorney, they are the most important pre-requisites. By finding an attorney who is trustworthy, experienced, and has a strong sense of integrity, you can go a long way in protecting your legal and financial interests.
